Here’s Why Pap Smears Are So Important
Many women struggle to remember the last time they had a Pap smear. In 2020, the American Cancer Society (ACS) updated its Pap smear guidelines to start screening at an older age and recommend a specific type of test (HPV test).
This means it’s easier than ever to forget — and even skip — your routine screenings, putting your health at risk.
Staying up-to-date with Pap smears is essential for detecting cervical cancer early and ensuring effective treatment. In honor of Cervical Health Awareness Month, Farly Sejour, MD, Natalie Gould, WHNP-BC, and our team at Solace Women’s Care in Conroe, Texas, are highlighting the importance of Pap smears.
Screenings can detect cervical cancer before symptoms emerge
A Pap smear is a simple test that checks for abnormal changes in your cervical cells. During the test, our team gently collects a small sample of cells from your cervix and sends it to a lab to be examined under a microscope.
It’s a quick procedure that can feel slightly uncomfortable but is not typically painful. This small step can identify potential issues before they develop into cancer, making early detection and prevention possible.
HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for nearly all cervical cancer cases. This common virus typically transmits through sexual contact and remains in the body unnoticed for years. The HPV test identifies high-risk strains of the virus that are most likely to lead to cervical cancer.
When paired with Pap smears, this screening strategy offers a powerful way to detect and manage risks before cancer develops.
Recently updated guidelines make Pap smears more convenient
In 2020, the ACS updated its recommendations to simplify cervical cancer screening. The organization recommends that women begin screening at age 25 instead of 21. The guidelines suggest an HPV test every five years as the primary method, or a Pap smear every three years as an alternative.
Combining the two tests (co-testing) is also an option for those who prefer a more thorough approach. While less frequent screenings reduce hassle, it’s essential to stay on schedule to protect your health.
Cervical cancer symptoms are easy to miss
Another reason why screening is so important is that cervical cancer often has no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they can be vague and easy to attribute to other issues. These typically include:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause
- Watery, bloody, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain during intercourse
- Persistent back, leg, or pelvic pain
By the time symptoms are noticeable, the disease may have progressed, making screening critical for early detection and treatment.
