Tips for Navigating a Winter Pregnancy
It’s no secret that pregnancy brings many changes to your lifestyle and your habits. When you’re pregnant, you might find those simple things — like the changing seasons — require adjustments that you weren’t prepared for.
Being pregnant in the winter months can bring a welcome break from the hot temperatures of summer, but it might also have you wondering how to navigate the season with your growing belly.

Get your flu shot
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu shot in early fall each year. Flu shots reduce your risk of getting sick from the influenza virus, and it’s safe to get one if you’re pregnant.
Along with getting your annual flu vaccination, take extra care to practice good hygiene. Being pregnant can make you more susceptible to winter viruses, so wash your hands regularly and thoroughly. Avoid crowds as much as possible.
Drink plenty of water
The temperature is cooler in the winter, which means you’re less likely to overheat or feel thirsty. You can still get dehydrated, however. Cold, dry outdoor air and warm forced-air heat indoors can sap moisture from your body and leave you dry and dehydrated.

Stay active
Winter weather makes the thought of staying snuggled in bed extra appealing, but not getting enough physical activity can make pregnancy symptoms worse and contribute to extra weight gain.
Stay active throughout the winter with pregnancy-safe exercise. Walking is a great way to get active if you’re pregnant, but make sure conditions aren’t icy before you set out. Consider prenatal yoga or other gentle exercise if you want to stay indoors.
Dress in layers
Pregnancy makes your body temperature rise, and cool weather can be a welcome respite. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get cold if you’re pregnant. Being prepared for temperature changes can help you stay comfortable in all conditions.
Depending on the weather, you might not need a heavy winter coat — not to mention that it can be difficult to find a coat that fits comfortably over your growing belly. Instead, dress in layers and bring an extra sweater so you can adjust your clothing as your temperature fluctuates.
Enjoy the holiday season
Being pregnant during the holiday season is a special time. Enjoy celebrating with your friends and family as you prepare for the arrival of your baby.
Take the opportunity to prioritize sleep and spend quality time with your partner before your family grows. If you find yourself too tired to check things off your holiday to-do list, don’t be afraid to ask loved ones for help shopping, wrapping gifts, and decorating.
